Not everything is hunky-dory when it comes to the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and the Teesta Lower Dam (stage III) project near Siliguri, North Bengal. The project, when completed, will produce 132 mw of power. Besides, the Kalijhora area, north of the Coronation Bridge on Teesta, will get a major dam, several water reservoirs and watersheds. Experts, NGOs and residents of this area are, however, unhappy. They argue that any construction here is a sure recipe for disaster as the area is well known for its high seismicity. The nhpc and West Bengal Pollution Board have sought to allay these misgivings, but doubts persist.
