Less than 24 hours after star wife-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan visited the ancestral village of the Bachchan family in Babu Patti, Pratapgarh district, the EC’s axe fell on her political career. Her Rajya Sabha MP status was nullified as she was holding an "office of profit"—chairperson of the UP Film Development Corporation. The EC had acted on a complaint filed by Kanpur Congressman M.M. Shukla whose RS nomination was rejected on technical grounds. Shukla’s plea was that the ‘job’ entitled Jaya to government accommodation, official vehicle, monthly salary etc. Jaya maintains she resigned before filing her nomination. It’s another matter that once she got the seat, the SP government handed back the upfdc charge to her. that doesn’t stop her from crying vendetta.
