No Patient Hearing

The ruling Left Front government in West Bengal is very clearly rattled by the recent exposes in the media of inefficiency, corruption, and mismanagement in government hospitals. That explains why embattled chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya went so far as to ban the entry of newspersons into hospitals. He withdrew the ban later but said that under no circumstance should the press disturb patients. Bhattacharya’s extreme reaction was strange since the government has received no complaints about the media on this count. The chief minister apparently took umbrage at the crowd of reporters and photographers who were present at the BelleVue Clinic where he had gone to see Indian captain Saurav Ganguly.
