Mumbai's Terror Circle

  • Ahl-e-Hadees: Conservative Islamic sect. Much of the Lashkar- e-Toiba draws inspiration from it, though its religious leaders do not endorse violence. It has a presence in the city.

  • Jaish-e-Mohammad: Pak-based militant group orchestrating terror in the Kashmir Valley. It has its modules in Mumbai. Masterminded recent attacks on suburban railway commuters in Mumbai in conjunction with operatives of SIMI.

  • Lashkar-e-Toiba: Mainly involved in terrorist strikes in J&K. But has a presence in Maharashtra. Also known as Jannat-ud-Dawan.

  • SIMI (Students Islamic Movement of India): Students wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami. Banned under POTA. Its members are well-educated and include doctors, engineers and MBA students.

  • Bedaare Ummat: Extremist religious sect. Its pamphlets were recovered from some of the Mulund-blast accused.

  • Gujarat Revenge Group: Very little is known about this outfit, apparently formed post-Godhra. An e-mail from it giving instructions was recovered from one of the accused in the Ghatkopar-blast.
