The management of Air-India has decided that its air hostesses should do their job turned out in ethnic chic. And the famed handwoven silk ‘tie and dye’ Pochampally saree from Andhra Pradesh has been chosen as the official uniform for air hostesses on the carrier. The airline management has already placed orders for 6,000 sarees and dress material with the Andhra Pradesh weavers cooperative. Air-India opted for the Pochampally saree after a presentation last week in Mumbai. The weavers had worked with inputs from the nift. The Air-India order comes at a time when the weavers of Pochampally—a village outside Hyderabad—are going through a bad patch with falling sales and profits.
