In the Supreme Court
  • Contempt case against Kalyan Singh and six officials, for not having fulfilled their promise to protect the Babri Masjid against demolition on December 6, 1992. Notices were issued suo motu by the apex court 12 days after the demolition. Clubbed with this is a contempt petition filed by one Mohammed Aslam Bhure against P.V. Narasimha Rao, L.K. Advani, Kalyan Singh and five others. The last hearing was on November 20, 1997. Date of next hearing yet to be fixed. (The above contempt case is not to be confused with the apex court’s order on October 24, 1994, sentencing Kalyan Singh to a day’s imprisonment for not having stopped the construction of a chabutra near the disputed site in Ayodhya in July 1992).
  • Petition by one Mohamed Hashim against the order of the Allahabad high court allowing enhancement of pooja facilities (halving the distance for ‘darshan’, etc.) at the disputed site The HC order was stayed. A counter-case filed by Devaki Nandan Aggarwal seeks further enhancement. Last heard on May 10, 1996. Date of next hearing to be fixed after the contempt plea (above) is disposed of.

    In the Allahabad High Court

  • Four title suits, originally filed in the civil court at Faizabad, to decide disposal of the disputed site ( and such portion of the surrounding land as is necessary for use of the title).
    This is the crucial case.
    Three were by Hindu organizations/individuals, one by a Muslim organization/individual. The petitioners are Gopal Singh Vishard (suit no. 2 of 1950); Nirmohio Akhara ( suit no. 26 of 1959); Sunni Central Board of Waqfs and some others (suit no. 12 of December 18, 1961); Devaki Nandan Aggarwal ( suit no. 236 of 1989). The suit filed by Paramhans Ramchandra Dass (no. 25 of 1950) was withdrawn in 1990.
  • Criminal revision petitions, four in all, for quashing of CBI chargesheets against L.K. Advani and others. In May 1998, high court ruled the petitions were maintainable and next hearing is on July 8, 1998. Thirty-three of the 49 accused are represented in the four petitions.

  • Criminal cases against L.K. Advani and others for conspiring/abetting in the destruction of the Babri Masjid. Forty-seven FIRs filed at different police stations were consolidated by the CBI into one case and chargesheets naming 49 persons filed in the designated court. The special additional sessions judge had ordered framing of charges on September 9, 1997. However, pending disposal of criminal revision petitions in the high court, the matter has been adjourned to August, 1998.
