- Keshubhai Patel, the most powerful of Gujarat BJP leaders, is sulking. He has turned down a Union cabinet berth because he wants to remain in reckoning in Ahmedabad. He has also refused to take over as the president of the state unit;
- BJP Gujarat chief Rajindersinh Rana is dead against Modi, mainly because the new CM had proposed sweeping changes within the organisation after taking over. He had suggested that Rana be removed along with vice-president Suresh Gandhi and general secretary Nalin Bhatt, both said to be close to Keshubhai;
- Modi is barely on talking terms with some of his cabinet colleagues like revenue minister Haren Pandya;
- Industry minister Suresh Mehta, the number two in the Gujarat cabinet, is one of the most vocal members in the state cabinet and has publicly censured the government's role during the riots.
Furrowed Brows
The assembly stands dissolved, Modi has his election groundwork ready, but dissent within the party and fears of Vaghela unleashing a strong caste card make the Gujarat CM a nervous man.
- Temporary employment to 2.25 lakh people;
- Free housing for 20,000 slum-dwelling families;
- Appointment of one lakh temporary gram sevaks in 18,000 villages;
- One lakh instrument kits to be made available for self-employment under the Vishwakarma scheme;
- Employment to one lakh poorest of the poor under the Shramyogi programme;
- Employment of 25,000 youth on a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000 each for making towns and cities 'green' and environment-friendly;
- Provide employment to 20,000 slum dwellers with pucca houses under the Nirmal Gujarat scheme. The names of all the schemes have been coined by Modi himself;
- The existing Vijaylakshmi scheme to provide Narmada bonds to 30,000 poor school-going children was extended to Rs 1 lakh;
- Thirty-nine ministers asked to give Rs 10,000 each for development projects.
