The police was alerted of the rape incident when the victim sent a flurry of SMSes to a relative in Berlin who got in touch with the German Embassy in New Delhi. There were apprehensions in various quarters that since this was a case involving the son of a senior police officer, the accused may walk free. But that was not to be. The prosecution’s case rested chiefly on the statement of the victim and the medical report. That, along with the deposition of 13 witnesses, was enough to secure Mohanty’s conviction. This is the second fast-track rape trial in Rajasthan. Another German tourist was raped by an autorickshaw driver and his colleague in Jodhpur on May 11, 2005. They too got life terms, and within 16 days of the crime.
