Despite Reservation...

Did Gen V.K. Singh buckle under pressure from his then chief?

D
id Gen V.K. Singh readily agree to a new date of birth, as media reports suggest? A letter he wrote on July 1, 2008, to Gen Deepak Kapoor, then army chief, had this to say: “I have been greatly hurt and pained by the aspersions cast on my integrity and military reputation, which we all jealously guard. At the same time, I must also emphasise that I have greatest regard and faith in you not only as my chief but also as an elder and role model. Thus, I had no qualm in giving in writing whatever I was asked for, despite my reservation.”

He asks: “What are the ‘constraints’ mentioned by MS branch in their last letter, which compel them to maintain the date as May 10, 1950, despite the ssc certificate having been given?”

On November 12, 2009, he wrote again to Gen Kapoor: “In July 2008, when I wrote to you to seek justice and elaboration on the MS branch constraints, you had told me that the case is closed and will not be discussed. I have taken your directions in letter and spirit...after the MS wrote that this function is of AG branch, I have treated this issue as closed. I am sure you are well aware of these facts.”
