'A Whip Isn't Free And Fair'

Election Commissioner G.V.G. Krishnamurthy

Are you surprised at the political response to your 'personal' view?

Their reaction is illogical. They say they want the best man, they say they want a free and fair poll, they say it'll be a secret ballot. Then, why issue a whip?

Why not?

A whip clearly implies, "do as we say, or else". It's like directing the horse to go where you want it to. The doctrine of a free, fair poll—the EC's bounden duty—doesn't hold when a whip is issued.

Hence this "electoral activism"?

The president of India is the president of the people, not of political parties. This is not their internal matter, to be fixed through cosy understandings.

What was the provocation for this loud thinking now?

The need for a competent president—a towering public figure with a record of service and sacrifice—is more pronounced because of the 13-party coalition.
