A Train Of Thought

On September 16, World Ozone Day, the Southern Railways decided to do an eco-friendly turn by trying to comply with the who’s 1996 Montreal protocol, which directed that both citizens and organisations should stop using harmful cfcs as a refrigerant in air conditioners. The Indian Railways uses CFCs. But that might end soon. Says chief electrical workshop engineer G. Gunalan of the Southern Railways workshop, Chennai: "We modified one of the existing AC coaches with ozone-friendly refrigerant R134a." This will pave the way for changing the refrigerant in all coaches of the Indian Railways in the next few years. The full-scale implementation will take another two years.
