'Leave This Court Right Now': CJI Chandrachud Loses Cool At Senior Advocate

CJI Chandrachud got into a heated argument with senior advocate Vikas Singh who, listing the matter regarding lawyers' chambers, apparently threatened to reach his doorstep if it was not listed.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Thursday lost his temper at senior advocate and Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh and asked him to “keep quiet” and ”leave the court” during a hearing on a petition by the lawyers’ body seeking land allotment of lawyers’ chambers.

CJI Chandrachud got into a heated argument with Singh who, listing the matter, apparently threatened to escalate it and even take it to “your lordships’ residence”, reports said.

“Leave this court right now,” CJI Chandrachud, furious, told the advocate and asked him to keep his voice down.

The CJI reminded Singh that the petition by the SC bar association demanded the conversion of land which was allotted to the Supreme Court. The matter had not been listed six times previously.

“You cannot expect the bench to be cowered down. I have been in this profession for 22 years. I have never been browbeaten by a member of the Bar, by a litigant, or by anyone else. And I will not let this happen in the final two years of my career... you can pursue your political agendas outside the court hall," the CJI said.

Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal and NK Kaul have apologised to the CJI on behalf of the bar, Bar and Bench reported.
