The Philippines

Gurcharan, a fluent Tagalog speaker, says he likes Manila because Filipinos are very friendly. "But I face great difficulty in collecting dues," he says in Tagalog. "My debtors often hide when it is time for them to pay up." Reddie Calderon, Filipino administrator of the Khalsa Diwan in Manila for four years, admires the perseverance of the Sikhs. "Even a mere P3 collection from one borrower isn't too little for them," she says.

The glue that holds them together is the Sikh religion. Says Gurcharan, who is also the treasurer of the gurudwara: "When a newcomer who has no money or relatives here arrives, we dole out some money for him to start a business. If he makes it, fine. If he doesn't, we donate money again so that he can buy his ticket home."
