The Area Of Holy Conflict

Israeli pockets: In 1967 Israel captured West Bank and Gaza Strip. Palestinians want to set up a state there. Israel is not ready to return the areas because of a sizable population of Jews there.

Jerusalem: The city is sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims. Israel claims it all, Palestinians want to share it. Old city is the centre of ethnic violence in the town

Temple mount: Situated in the heart of old Jerusalem city; an area of 14 hectares blocked in by ancient walls and topped by Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque. Originally the site of the first Jewish temple destroyed by Romans later. This was the centre of the current violence.

Dome of the Rock: Built in 691 AD, this Muslim shrine over the rock is the site where Abraham sacrificed Isaac and from which Mohammad ascended to heaven.

Wailing Wall: Popularly known as Western Wall. Part of the original wall King Herod built for the second Jewish temple in 20 BC. This is the holiest site in Judaism. Jews plant their kisses on the wall as part of their worship.

Al-Aqsa Mosque: Originally built in 715 AD and rebuilt many times. Muslim says that on arriving from Mecca during his night journey, Mohammad tethered his winged horse here .

Gethsemane: Garden where Jesus was betrayed and seized. Some of the olive trees are believed to be 2,000 years old, and could have been seen by Jesus. Next to it is "Mount of Olives" where Jesus spent his last night before being taken for execution.
