Suddenly, the political class shakes off the incubus of News International, and, at a bound, is free. What had begun as a study in hypocrisy ended in an orgy of penitence; and since in the mythology of Western progress, good always comes out of evil, the press, the media, the police and politicians will all have learned lessons and vowed ‘Never again’.
