New Mexico State University Takes Stand Against Hazing as Student-Athletes Prepare for Fall Season

With the upcoming fall season on the horizon, New Mexico State University (NMSU) is taking a strong stance against hazing within its athletic programs. The university's top administrators are focusing on ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for student-athletes, emphasizing their commitment to eradicating hazing practices.

The institution's dedication to combating hazing comes in the wake of previous incidents that marred its reputation. In a noteworthy move, the university addressed alleged hazing involving team members of the men's basketball program. A review of internal emails highlighted the institution's determination to handle the situation while prioritizing the safety and integrity of its student-athletes.

The email exchanges among university officials revealed a sense of urgency in addressing the issue of hazing. During a critical moment in February, as news of the alleged hazing emerged, administrators engaged in discussions to craft a comprehensive message that would announce the suspension of the men's basketball season. The administrators  didn’t want athletes to first learn of the decision through media channels. 
The university's leadership recognized the significance of addressing the issue head-on, as the hazing allegations not only affected the reputation of the institution but also drew comparisons to similar incidents at other universities.

NMSU's proactive approach to preventing hazing extends beyond addressing immediate concerns. The university explored the possibility of implementing training sessions for student-athletes to raise awareness about hazing, sexual assault, and other misconduct. Additionally, discussions were held regarding the creation of a seminar akin to those offered at other institutions. THe seminars would be  designed to educate students about responsible behavior and the importance of a respectful sports culture.
