Dsquared2's 'Makeover Machine' Transforms Grunge To Glamour At Milan Fashion Week

Milan Fashion Week dazzled with transformative runway theatrics, featuring Dsquared2's "makeover machine" and Philipp Plein's cross-gender Billionaire debut.

Milan Fashion Week took a thrilling leap into the upcoming Fall-Winter 2024-25 season with a spectacular showcase of creativity, innovation, and a touch of grunge-to-glam switcheroo.

The four days of preview shows include 22 runway shows and 39 presentations.

At the forefront of the spectacle was Dsquared2, the renowned Milan brand founded by identical Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten.

On the opening night, the Catens introduced a "makeover machine," a fictitious device placed at the center of their runway. Models entered the machine in disheveled exploratory streetwear, only to emerge on the other side transformed into refined versions donning glossy formalwear.

And as explained by @ideservecouture, an Instagram sensation:

Describing the concept backstage, Dan Caten explained to news agency AP, "It’s a transformation from day to night: the day version of twins and the night version of twins."

The runway featured a captivating twin switch, where grungy models in tattered T-shirts and fur parkas transformed into glammed-up versions in ribbon dresses and heels. The Catens, being identical twins themselves, offered a unique perspective on the duality of individuality with the same face.

For the grand finale, Dan Caten zapped into Dean Caten, causing a momentary short-circuit and an unexpected drag appearance, leaving the fashion crowd in awe.

German designer Philipp Plein made waves by introducing women's looks for the first time in his Billionaire menswear line. The Billionaire man, donned in warm parkas with leather detailing, shared the stage with the Billionaire woman, presenting long elegant coats matching daywear. The collection unfolded at the Principe Savoia hotel bar, accompanied by a soulful lounge singer.

Philipp Plein shared his vision backstage, stating, "I wanted to be where everything is going on," showcasing the brand's commitment to evolving with the ever-changing fashion landscape.

Stone Island, the 41-year-old Italian luxury streetwear brand, made its Milan runway debut with a sensorial experience that featured flashing strobe lights and pulsating music. Models in Stone Island ensembles stood motionless on metal risers, creating an immersive atmosphere that made it challenging for attendees to discern the intricate looks.

Despite a glitch during the planned finale with a curtain drop, leaving the fashion crowd questioning if they missed something, Stone Island successfully made its mark on the runway.

The brand, known for its focus on textile research, is following the footsteps of its parent company Moncler, transitioning from luxury activewear to the spotlight of the runway.
