Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun described the leaders’ reciprocal visits within six months as “of historic, milestone significance”.
“China is willing to work with the US to ... strengthen dialogue and cooperation, properly manage differences, continuously enhance the well-being of the peoples of both countries, and promote world peace, stability and prosperity,” Guo said, as quoted by Reuters.
Officials Meet Ahead of Visit
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by telephone on September 17 about high-level exchanges between the two countries.
US and Chinese officials also held talks in New York ahead of the Trump-Xi meeting. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and China’s chief trade negotiator Li Chenggang also taking part.
Washington proposed a mechanism for sharing information about serious artificial intelligence threats, Al Jazeera reported.
“We think that, just like with any cross-border activity, that moving from opaque to more transparency between the number one and the number two AI powers in the world is very important,” Bessent said. No other major agreement was announced at the meeting, according to Al Jazeera.
Russian Oil Tariff Threat
The visit follows Trump’s signing of the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which authorises expanded sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia and countries that buy its energy exports.

China is the largest buyer of Russian oil, ahead of India. Beijing has rejected US attempts to impose tariffs over its purchases of Russian oil and gas, saying trade between countries should not be subject to interference by third parties.
