Tata Altroz vs Maruti Baleno vs Hyundai Elite i20 vs VW Polo vs Honda Jazz: Spec Comparison

Details of Tata’s upcoming premium hatchback are out, so let’s see how the numbers compare to the competition

Tata has unveiled the Altroz premium hatchback, the production version of the 45X concept that was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo, at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show. The details of the production-spec car have been revealed and we see how it measures up against rivals like the Maruti Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo and Honda Jazz with the launch expected in mid-2019.

Dimensions

Longest: Maruti Baleno

Widest: Tata Altroz

Tallest: Honda Jazz

Longest wheelbase: Hyundai Elite i20

The Tata Altroz is based on a new ALFA-ARC platform and is the widest car here while the Baleno is the longest overall and the Elite i20 has the longest wheelbase. The Honda Jazz is the tallest premium hatchback here while the Volkswagen Polo is the smallest by most measurements except overall length.

Engines

Most power: VW Polo GT TSI

Most torque: VW Polo GT TSI

Tata’s new premium hatchback will be the most powerful and torquiest petrol option (if you do not count the Baleno RS or Polo GT TSI). However, take into account the turbo-petrol versions of both Maruti and Volkswagen, and the Altroz finds itself falling short of the Polo GT TSI’s figures while nearly matching those of the Baleno RS. While Tata has only revealed the availability of a 5-speed manual gearbox on the Alturas for now, an AMT cannot be ruled out. Only the Altroz’s petrol engine’s specifications have been revealed for now.

Price range We're comparing petrol models only. The Baleno and Polo range also include Baleno RS and Polo GT TSI, respectively. Price range of Altroz rivals includes variants with automatic transmission as well.
