The legendary Shakespearean actor and director Kenneth Branagh’s ground-breaking New York production of Macbeth opens in the thick of a battle that takes place offstage in Shakespeare’s original. As Macbeth’s victorious fight ends, three ‘witches’ mystically appear, prophesying greatness for the war hero. Traditionally shown as hunched old hags, Branagh makes them young, nimble ‘weird sisters’, with soot-smeared look-alike faces, messy hair, cloak-covered long black dresses. Among these defiant, near-indistinguishable girls who chose to go to the dark side is a talented, Chennai-born Singaporean Tamil: Anjana Vasan, after acting in two Stratford productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company, has landed this plum role in a spectacular Macbeth.
