Suchitra Krishnamurthy

The actress-singer tries her hand at writing with Swapnalok Society: The Summer of Cool

The multifaceted Suchitra is now an author.

(Laughs) I always wanted to write though I didn’t know what to write about.

Tell us about your book.

The story revolves around a 10-year-old girl, Chitrangana, in search of her father. It’s based on her growing up in the South Mumbai society. A fictional work based on real-life instances.

Is the book meant for children in particular?

It can be read by 10- to 100-year-olds.

You’re planning a series on the same theme?

Yes, and it is based on the ethos of the educated urban middle class portrayed through the people living in Swapnalok Society.

Acting, singing, painting, writing—which one’s closest to your heart?

I don’t see them differently. They are part of the same creative process. I want to explore them further at different stages of my life.

You’re also involved with several NGOs.

I find it emotionally satisfying and would like to devote more time to such activities.

Your view of the Indian pop music scene.

It died a natural death several years ago. The dynamics of the industry have changed. Music is available online. Even the sale of film music is down by 60 per cent! Our system is dominated by industry rather than talent.

The coming together of the film and television industry is the latest trend.

It is a fantastic trend. More people are coming to the industry. There’s no hierarchy and it has become democratic. Movies are larger than life. But television and internet are people’s media.

People loved you as Ana in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. Why the hiatus from Bollywood?

I got married very young. I gave up acting because it was expected of me.

When do we see you on silver screen?

Karma, Confessions and Holi and Mittal vs Mittal are my forthcoming movies. I have no idea of their release dates though!
