Veteran actor Sowcar Janaki breathed her last on Friday (August 21) after being hospitalised and placed in the ICU after falling ill due to old age. She was 94. She died at 1:59 pm. Recently, actor Kayal Devaraj shared the news of Sowcar Janaki's hospitalisation on his social media with an update on her health. Nadigar Sangam President Nassar confirmed the news of her demise. Earlier, the members of Nadigar Sangam visited the actor in the hospital.

Sowcar Janaki dies

Nassar shared the news with the press via a statement. “Legendary star Sowcar Janaki (94) passed away. Her mortal remains will be placed at Centoph Road, Teyampet, from 5 PM,” read his statement.

Before her death, Kayal shared that Janaki had been hospitalised at the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai. He wrote, “#SowcarJanaki August 19th. Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki (aged 94) has been admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet, Chennai, due to ill health. She is currently receiving intensive medical care.”

He also wrote that Nassar and other Nadigar Sangam members visited her. “On behalf of the South Indian Artistes' Association (Nadigar Sangam), President Nassar and actors Soundararaja and Hemachandran visited her in person to inquire about her well-being. #Hospitalized #KauveryHospital #NadigarSangam #Nasser,” he added.

Who was Sowcar Janaki?

Born Sankaramanchi Janaki, she had a career spanning more than seven decades. She worked across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema and acted in more than 400 films.

She was known for her versatility and ability to play diverse range of characters. She was one of the most celebrated and accomplished senior artistes in Indian cinema.

Janaki was conferred with the Padma Shri in 2022 for her contribution to Indian art and cinema.

Sowcar Janaki was married to Sankaramanchi Srinivasa Rao. They had three children: Yagna Prabha Koty, Venkataramana Sankaramanchi and Sachi Rao.

Sowcar Janaki career

Janaki made her debut in cinema with the 1950 Telugu film Shavukaru, directed by LV Prasad. Her Tamil debut was with Valayapathi (1952), directed by TR Sundaram.

In 1954, she made Kannada debut with Devakannika. In 1959, she starred alongside Dr Rajkumar in Kannada cinema’s first pan-India movie, Mahishasura Mardini. In 1964, she debuted in Malayalam cinema with School Master.
