The problem erupted when ESPN turned into an encrypted channel on May 15 and demanded monthly payment based on the number of subscribers, instead of the flat fee charged by pay channels like STAR Movies and Zee Cinema. Now, while it learns the rules the hard way, those caught in between—the cricket-crazed viewers and, more crucially, the advertisers—are feeling the pinch.
