Shubha Vedula

Shubha Vedula on being among the top 40 finalists in American Idol, and why music will always be her first love.

What was it like making it to the top 40?

Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. I learned it’s best to just perform at every stage as if it’s your last. It was unique, entertaining.

How did it all work out for you?

I submitted my video to American Idol, was later called for an audition, where I sang Something’s Got a Hold on Me by Christina Aguilera.

You’re just 17. Were you the youngest participant?

The youngest you can be on the show is 16, so I was one of them. It did not seem we were competing against each other. It was one big family.

Did you receive any formal training in music?

I did take music theory and vocal lessons for a year, and even practised old folk songs. But it didn’t help much. I believe in self-exploration.

Even though you’ve been eliminated, Randy Jackson has asked you to come back?

Yes, at the end when I was saying bye to the judges, Randy hugged me and said I should come back next year, which was really encouraging.

Who are your favourite artistes?

Beyonce, Christina, Pink and A.R. Rahman.

You sang Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, which was a big hit with the audience.

All the songs clicked with the audience. Elton John’s Circle of Life, If I Can’t Have You by the Bee Gees and When You Believe by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

Do you want to pursue a career in music?

Other than auditioning for American Idol again, I’m writing my own songs and trying to find other musicians to work with.

How does the sudden brush with fame feel?

Exhilarating. There are so many who recognise me...people from Indonesia, UK are tweeting.

Will you ever perform in India?

I have a dual citizenship. It depends on where music takes me. But eventually I can see myself in India.
