Watching Mujhse Shaadi Karogi has all to do with one's terribly low expectations. Having witnessed the worst lineup of Hindi films, Mujhse does make for a pleasant timepass. Following a string of laughless flicks, Dhawan improves but is still a long way from a vintage laugh riot like Deewana Mastana or Hero No. 1. He's back not with a bang but with a whimper.
There can never be any pretence to originality in Dhawan's cinema. Here the inspiration comes from the Jack Nicholson-Adam Sandler starrer Anger Management, right down to the last scene where a cricket match replaces the baseball tournament. And you have Kapil Dev, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Mohammad Kaif, Javagal Srinath, Parthiv Patel, Ashish Nehra and the metaphor-obsessed Navjot Singh Sidhu, all coaxing Salman to say those three vital words to Priyanka. So deliberately cute and syrupy that you squirm!
There are other films Dhawan doffs his hat to—Katha, Andaz Apna Apna, Curse of the Jade Scorpion, Matrix, besides all of his own films. He sets the proceedings in a Baywatch beach complete with muscled lifeguards and bikini-clad bimbettes, all dressed in red. In the effort to cook a khichdi of so many derivations, the plot was bound to be lost. So what? Dhawan's films are all about plotholes. So you have Salman moving in to Mauritius-masquerading-as-Goa to get his anger in control. There he falls in love with the chand ka tukda, Priyanka, who stays in saamne wali khidki. Sadly, all his efforts to woo her come a cropper because he involuntarily keeps bashing up her dog-loving dad Amrish Puri. Confusion only gets confounded when he gets a new roommate, Akshay, who also has eyes on the same girl.
Just keep your feel for frivolity intact. The film's just not silly and insane enough to keep you endlessly amused. Songs are intrusive and large tracts of utter dullness follow. Salman has little else to do than look flustered. Priyanka desperately needs to liven up. Kader Khan and Puri are deadpan but their characters could have been used better, particularly Khan's hugely balmy Duggal saab who suffers from a different disability every day. It's left to Akshay to bring the house down with a characteristic mix of crudity, crassness and viciousness. If that's your idea of mirth.
