T
he Aziz Mirza, as we know him, comes to the fore at the end of Kismat Konnection when he makes his hero deliver an impassioned speech about global warming, big nations bullying small ones and how in the name of progress we’re forgetting human values. Ok, it’s a rather ponderous pulpit talk but has remnants of innocent idealism and the socialistic streak displayed by Mirza, Kundan Shah and co in their TV days and even in Aziz’s early films like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (a tribute to Shree 420), Yes Boss and Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. Kismat Konnection plays more on the gloss than substance.

The hero, Raj Malhotra, is introduced by SRKs voiceover. Ironical, considering Raj, besides Rahul, has been SRK’s on-screen name in countless films. The character is a throwback to the heroes played by SRK in Mirza’s Raju..., Yes Boss and Phir Bhi.... A nice, simple guy who comes a full circle to being a nice, simple guy after a little brush with corruption.

Raj (Shahid) is a college topper in Toronto but destiny loves playing cruel games with him. Five years after college, he still hasn’t been able to find his feet. Luck eludes him while another friend has already set up a Rs 200-crore business. It’s a perfectly believable problem but why set it in Toronto? Would it not have had far more urgency had it been a Mumbai-Delhi-Bangalore-Chennai-Calcutta-Hyderabad story, places we know, where success is getting narrowly defined as amassing wealth?

Mirza’s film lacks the homegrown touches. Instead, it unfolds like a typical Hollywood flick, right down to the character of the oracle (Juhi doing the Whoopi Goldberg of Ghost). Raj finds Priya (Balan) is lucky for him and he has to ensure she’s around when professional issues need to be sorted out. She, like in Lage Raho Munnabhai, fights for the cause of the marginal by running a community centre. While keeping her by his side, he also falls in love with her. The finale is about choosing between love and success—a mall and a community centre.

Shahid is likeable; but his muscles can give Salman Khan a complex. Balan looks matronly in western outfits and uses her eyes too much—over-expression can be as counter-productive as a blank look.
