Katrina Kaif

With two major hits this year, she has at last found her place in Bollywood

You’ve had a great year—Partner and Namaste London have both been hits.

You know, when the public is watching your film for 80/90 days, that thrill is higher than any critical acclaim.

Tell us about the upcoming Welcome.

This is a totally paisa vasool film.

Your role?

I play a girl from a family of dons. Imagine what happens to every boy who comes along!

How difficult has it been to live down the foreigner tag?

Acceptance has come gradually and I have reached a place where it doesn’t matter any more and doesn’t affect me.

Your Hindi has improved, hasn’t it?

Yes (laughs). I understand even the nuances now. I do take a little longer to dub but I’m very comfortable with it. It’s four years since I’ve been at it.

Any roles you desire?

A strong role which stays in the mind of the audience. A well-etched character that will become memorable. You know you’ve done one kind of role and must take a step forward.

And dream directors?

Oh, so many. Sanjay Bhansali for his presentation, Aditya Chopra for his cinematic sense, Raju Hirani for his sensitivity.

Tell us about your much-talked-about screen chemistry with Akshay Kumar?

We have a good screen chemistry and a good working rapport. I am comfortable working with him.

In Partner you were opposite Govinda rather than Salmaan?

It’s nice to do the unexpected. The role had Govinda trying to get something out of his reach and it worked very well.

You’ve been talking about settling your family.

Yes, I am working towards that and have taken a few big steps. It’s going well.
