IFFM 2025 To Pay Special Tribute To Legendary Filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak With Retrospective On Birth Centenary

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, 2025 is set to honour the late legendary filmmaker, Ritwik Ghatak by doing a retrospect of his films at this year's edition. The special tribute is to mark the 100th birth anniversary of the towering figure of Indian cinema who redefined the language of cinema.

Ghatak’s contributions as a director, screenwriter, actor, and playwright to cinema is immense. The Partition Trilogy (Meghe Dhaka Tara, Komal Gandhar, Subarnarekha), Ajantrik, and Titash Ekti Nadir Naam among others are some of his masterpieces which dealt with social realities, feminism, and partition.

His revolutionary visual storytelling shaped the narrative of Indian cinema and is still studied and appreciated by filmmakers and scholars across the world.

Ghatak, who died at the age of 50, was honoured with a Padma Shri and multiple National Awards.

The 2025 edition of IFFM will have a dedicated retrospective of his iconic films, panel discussions, and academic tributes aimed at celebrating the legacy of the cinema icon and introducing his work to new global audiences.

While talking about the tribute, IFFM Festival Director Mitu Bhowmik Lange said, "Ritwik Ghatak was a visionary far ahead of his time. His cinema dealt with trauma, displacement, and identity with such poetic depth and urgency that it resonates even more today. At IFFM, we believe it is our responsibility to bring global attention to icons like Ritwik Ghatak, whose work shaped the conscience of Indian filmmaking. This centenary celebration is not just a tribute, it’s a reminder of the kind of stories we must continue to tell."

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2025, is scheduled to take place from August 14–August 24, 2025, where there will be screenings, panels, masterclasses, cultural events and award night.
