Billie Joe Armstrong, the frontman of rock band Green Day, had come out about his sexuality in 1995. Since then, the musician has been quite comfortable and open about being bisexual. As the band dropped its 14th studio album recently, Billie Joe Armstrong revealed that he is proud of being called a bisexual icon.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Billie Joe Armstrong revealed that he is proud of being a bisexual icon. He came out about his sexuality in 1995 during an interview with The Advocate. He said, “I like it. I think it's f---ing cool that someone calls me a bisexual icon. I've seen that before. I'm like, 'Fuck, yeah!'” Adding to the conversation, he said that he is happy with how conversations around sexuality and identity are viewed today.

The singer added, “Being a Gen X-er, I feel like there was a seed that got planted where it was the era in the '90s that we came up, where men were discovering more of being with other men and being more bisexual, and coming out with that, whether it was someone like Kurt Cobain or what I was saying. It's way more complex now, as far as sexuality. You're like, 'Wow, we've really come a long way.' Even though it's still kind of looked at as being taboo, I think people now are a lot more brave than they've ever been. I think people are way more open now."

Billie Joe Armstrong has been married to his wife, Adrienne, for 29 years now. The couple has two sons. Oftentimes, his marriage is used as a ground to refute his sexuality. Addressing this concern, he said, “Sexuality is always much more expansive than the typical, nuclear-family viewpoint.”

Green Day’s 14th studio album – ‘Saviors’ was released on January 19. The band shot to worldwide fame with their album ‘American Idiot’ in 2004.
