Kannada star Sudeep plays the rakish businessman whose obsession for Bindu (Samantha) consumes him, leading to Naani’s death. From buzzing inside Sudeep’s ears all night to making him crash a car and behave like a buffoon during a presentation, the fly unleashes a laugh riot.
It takes imagination to get an animated housefly to exhibit joy, relief, fear, victory, agony, rage and act heroic. My personal favourites were of the fly using a toothpick as a handweight to build muscle and sipping coffee at Cafe Coffee Day. And when the tiny thing loses a wing, the collective moan in the theatre tells you why Eega has become a runaway hit.
Sudeep is excellent in the role of a violent man who is reduced to comical self-destruction, with a ‘Hit’ insect spray his main weapon. Keeravani’s music and background score advance the theme considerably.
Eega, with its lion-hearted fly, reminds us that love is in the soul.
