Best of Bollywood

Vikram Bhatt

1. Dhoom My kind of fast-paced film; had a new idiom.

2. Hum Tum Inspired by my favourite film When Harry met Sally. Both Rani and Saif did a fine job.

3. Murder Started as a sex film but turned out to be the first hit of the year.

4. Mughal-e-Azam For obvious reasons.

5. Hulchul Because it was funny.

We also asked Vidhu Vinod Chopra to name his five best films. His verdict was: 1) Mughal e-Azam, for its epic performances; 2) Mughal-e-Azam, for its poetic dialogues; 3)Mughal-e-Azam, for its production design; 4) Mughal-e-Azam, for its melodious music; 5)Mughal-e-Azam, for its compelling direction.

Best of Hollywood
Karan Johar

1. Finding Neverland A director’s film. I loved Marc Forster’s Monster’s Ball but Finding Neverland is sheer genius. It’s my bet for the Oscars. Johnny Depp was absolutely fabulous.

2. The Motorcycle Diaries Lots of people around me felt it was slow, but WalterSalles’ masterful narrative style of the film was stand-out. It’s a film I’d take back home with me.

3. Old Boy This Korean film is stark, bloody, gruesome. It’s an unlikely film to have won the Grand Jury award in Cannes. But I found it very interesting—a man locked in prison for 15 years coming back to seek revenge.

4. Fahrenheit 9/11 Though I am not a hands-on political person, I like the way Michael Moore handles political point of view in an entertaining manner. I have seen Bowling for Columbine as well. But I specially liked 9/11. It held very well as a documentary.

5. Elephant Gus Van Sant’s take on the same incident as the one dealt in Bowling for Columbine is very well shot. I especially liked the way he packs in so much of history behind a single incident.

Best of TV Soaps
Suhel Seth, Adman

1. Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand (Star Plus) The soap has carried forward over the years in a compelling, realistic manner.

2. Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki (Star Plus)  An insight into how middle-class India thinks.

3. Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin (Sony)  It’s reinvented Plain Jane, made her part of folklore.

4. The Great Indian Comedy Show (Star One) Humour without slapstick.

5. Sarabhai versus Sarabhai (Star One)  Like its humour and Gujju perspective.
