Netflix has launched the first trailer for Brad Bird’s animated movie Ray Gunn, featuring Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson and Tom Waits in the voice cast.
The official synopsis states, "In Metropia, a gigantic city in an alternate future as seen from 1939, private eye Raymond Gunn (voiced by Sam Rockwell) is drawn into a case involving aliens, murder and a multimedia star named Venus Nova (voiced by Scarlett Johansson)."

Ray Gunn is helmed by two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratatouille, The Iron Giant) from a screenplay he wrote with Matthew Robbins (Crimson Peak, Dragonslayer), based on an original story by Bird. Bird also served as producer alongside John Lasseter, Lisa Beroud, David Ellison and Dana Goldberg.
Ray Gunn will be Bird’s first animated film made outside of Pixar since The Iron Giant in 1999. Bird told IndieWire, “I wanted it to go to a slightly different audience, and I wanted there to be a huge amount of overlap, obviously. The Pixar audience is wide, and I love that, and I love working with Pixar. I wanted to make this a little bit different flavor wise, and that’s why I didn’t pitch it at Pixar. Because they have their lane, and I can get down with that lane, but I don’t see this movie going down that lane. I wanted to aim it a little older. Not majorly older, teenager is fine. But make something a little more adult and major.”
Netflix unveiled voice cast additions of Alan Tudyk, Matt Berry, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Chernus, Kether Donohue, Michelle Rodriguez, Aasif Mandvi, Matt Jones, Kathryn Hunter, John Ratzenberger, Justin Peck and Patton Oswalt.
The creative team also includes editor Darren Holmes, composer Michael Giacchino, production designer Paul Felix, art director Wendell Luebbe, VFX supervisors Josh Herring and Adele Abada, director of photography Erik Smitt and costume designer Neysa Bove. The animation is produced by Skydance Animation (Swapped).
The streamer has also revealed that the film will get a limited 70mm theatrical release in select theaters December 4. The film will launch on Netflix on December 18.
