Disney Animation Head Jared Bush Teases A Kingdom Hearts Movie

Disney isn't opposed to a Kingdom Hearts movie. When IGN asked Walt Disney Animation Studios Boss Jared Bush at D23 if a Kingdom Hearts movie could transpire one day, the answer was packed with rich suggestion. While Bush obviously didn’t confirm anything, his response more than left the door open for such a project to get the go-ahead.

Jared Bush On Kingdom Hearts Movie Possibility

“I’d say, I’m always excited to hear what people are passionate about. And I’d say that we have a very bright future of new projects coming out — different ways of putting material out into the world. So I would just say, nothing is impossible (concerning a Kingdom Hearts movie).” Behind the potential adaptation is a sprawling story spun around Sora, the Keyblade and his battles against some of the franchise’s most powerful forces. Bush’s comments indicate Disney's rapid interest in expanding the franchise across games, television, and other formats.

Footage from Kingdom Hearts IV was shown at D23, giving a look at Sora returning to fight the Heartless, this time in a world based on the movie Coco. Back in June, there dropped a brand-new look at Kingdom Hearts IV (alongside a Switch 2 confirmation), and this weekend brought forth confirmation of a Coco-themed world in the game. Audiences also got an extended look trailer with a late 2027 release date. There was even gratifying Kingdom Hearts news beyond the game side of things, as Disney confirmed Kingdom Hearts: The Series, an anime series that’ll air on the Disney Channel and Disney+ in the future. Now, a movie being in the wings spikes anticipation even more. The franchise has passed $1 billion in retail revenue, and Disney has publicly called it one of its billion-dollar franchises.
