How did 3 happen?
How did 3 happen?
I had written a script for a short film. Dhanush read it and felt it could be made into a full-length film. At that time I was carrying my second baby Linga. I had time on my hands, so I decided to go for it.
Did you always want to become a director?
Yes, as I was literally born and brought up in the world of cinema.
Was Dhanush your first choice for the lead?
Without a doubt. Plus, the script really demands a serious actor.
Did he agree instantly?
He mulled over it for about a week as he was trying to work out his dates. Then luckily one of his projects got pushed.
Was it tough directing your husband?
Well, It has not been easy. When the film went on the floors, he hadn’t yet won the National Award. After the award, I got a bit nervous as expectations rose. But things have turned out fine.
Didn’t you want your father Rajnikant in your debut film?
Who wouldn’t? But the truth is this script doesn’t demand a star like Rajnikant.
Not even in a cameo?
I didn’t feel the need to rope him in merely for the sake of it.
But you’d like to direct him some day?
Of course. Isn’t it every Indian director’s dream to film my father (laughs)?
The lyrics of the song Kole Veri have been written by Dhanush, right?
Yes, he has begun writing the lyrics. In fact, I have written a song too.
Does your last name weigh you down?
I’d be lying if I said no. There’s an unspoken expectation from everyone. But I like to use that to work with more rigour; I know I can’t let people down.
