New Delhi, September 2, 2026: The Public Relations Consultants Association of India (PRCAI) today released the Ipsos White Paper: The Economic Impact of Public Relations in India at its annual Brand India Reputation summit – PRana 2026, highlighting that Public Relations in India is no longer a support function; it is building real value, contributing to economic impact.

India Inside: Shaping Reputation From Within is the third edition of PRana by PRCAI, and was held at The Leela, Gurugram, and brought together 15+ eminent voices from business, culture, governance, technology, and sport. Reputation Icons and storytellers such as Manu Joseph (Columnist, Novelist & Screenwriter); Padma Bhushan Pullela Gopichand (Chief National Coach, Indian Badminton), Aman Gupta (Co-founder, boAt; Founder, OFF/BEAT), Bhaskar Bhat (Former. MD, Titan Company), Vibha Paul Rishi (Independent Director, ICICI Bank; Founding Team Member, Titan Watches), Vineet Nayyar (Founder, Sampark Foundation; Former CEO, HCL Technologies), Harish Bhat (Bestselling Author; Former Brand Custodian, Tata Sons), Harish Bijoor (Business & Brand-strategy Specialist & Founder, Harish Bijoor Consults Inc.), and Anjali Bansal (Partner, Avaana Capital), among others, explored conversations on how India's reputation is shaped from within. The summit convened four curated conversation tracks: What India Says. What India DoesTrust Is Not a CampaignThe Future That Cannot Be Imported; and The People the World Already Believes In, brought alive through fireside dialogues, in-conversation panels, and PRana's signature 300Wise speech format.

Amidst an audience of 250 senior leaders, including the CXO community and Communication practitioners, a landmark white paper was released that stated that the Indian Public Relations industry, with revenues that stood at ₹3,230 crore (US$ 340 million), contributes to an estimated US$ 545 billion in economic value each year, through three strategic levers.

The first lever is the sustenance of revenue through brand awareness (approximately US$ 220 billion), the second is management of corporate reputation as an investor-facing asset (approximately US$ 265 billion), and the third is through mitigation of losses during crises (approximately US$ 60 billion). Reputation management, at US$ 265 billion, is the largest of the three levers, supporting the paper's central conclusion that reputation is no longer an intangible asset.

Three Levers, One Engine

The white paper estimates economic influence through three independently modelled levers. The first is revenue sustainability and growth by isolating public relations' contribution to brand awareness across nine major sectors, spanning IT and software services, banking and financial services, FMCG, automotive, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, hospitality and tourism, aviation, startups, tech unicorns and e-commerce, and education and edtech. By applying that share to an adjusted organised sector base of approximately US$1.2 trillion, the white paper estimates Public Relation's contribution to revenue sustainability and growth at approximately US$ 220 billion.

The second lever is reputation management. Drawing on published investor-relations research that finds approximately 28 percent of investor decision-making is influenced by a company's reputation, and isolating public relations' share of that influence, the white paper estimates the economic impact of PR-driven reputation management at an approximate US$ 265 billion, against India's listed market capitalisation of approximately US$ 4.5 to 4.75 trillion.

The third lever is crisis management, estimated by analysing more than ninety major crisis events, including brand backlash, product safety failures, operational disruptions, governance and financial misconduct, and cyber incidents, across top revenue-generating brands over the last ten years. Across all crises studied, the average impact was 0.35 per cent revenue erosion and 1.5 percent market capitalisation erosion. The study disaggregates the US$ 60 billion of annual value at risk into approximately US$ 4 billion of revenue and approximately US$ 56 billion of market capitalisation, the losses observed across the crises studied and, on the study's premise, the value that public relations involvement protects. In absolute terms, value at risk is led by startups, tech unicorns and e-commerce at approximately US$ 12.8 billion a year, followed by aviation at US$ 8.9 billion and healthcare and pharmaceuticals at US$ 7.2 billion.

"At PRana 2026, we opened with one question: what is shaping India's reputation story? The white paper we release today provides the economic answer. An industry of our size does not merely support business; it actively shapes the conditions under which businesses grow, survive crises, and retain the trust of investors and consumers alike. The US$545 billion figure is not a claim of revenue; it is a measure of consequence. And consequence is what should define how boardrooms think about this profession," said Kunal Kishore Sinha, President, PRCAI.

The white paper combined a primary survey of 500 Indian consumers, Ipsos's point of view, sector-level revenue and market capitalisation analysis, and secondary benchmarks. The paper concludes that reputation is no longer an intangible asset. It is a form of business currency with a direct effect on enterprise value.

“We have always known that reputation has value. What this white paper does, for the first time, is that it puts an economic number to that value. Reputation is no longer a soft asset – it is hard business currency, influencing investment, trade, diplomacy and innovation. PRana by PRCAI is now a significant stage that has evolved from a platform for stories and ideas into a larger conversation about India’s reputation and influence. This year, the Ipsos white paper gives that conversation an economic foundation that the industry can take into the boardrooms,” said Deeptie Sethi, CEO, PRCAI.

"This research white paper is significant because it moves the conversation about public relations from outputs to outcomes. The methodology we applied, linking brand awareness, investor decision-making, and crisis losses to the economic activity public relations impacts, gives the industry a defensible, evidence-based foundation for the value it creates. The findings are clear that reputation is a financial asset, and public relations is the discipline through which it is built and nurtured," said Deepak H, Partner & Country Lead, Ipsos Strategy3.
