New cafes in the neighbourhood are always cause for excitement—especially if they boast a special breakfast menu in addition to the smoked duck spaghetti and pan-charred scallops. So, like omlette-seeking missiles, we headed for Salt Water Cafe on a brisk February morning.

We decided to start with the rolls and Danish pastries. The cinnamon roll (Rs 65) had an unwelcome coconutty taste—but the hazelnut danish (Rs 50) was an instant hit. The waffles (Rs 180) and lemon pancakes (Rs 210) were nice, but not spectacular. The blueberry yoghurt with granola chunks (Rs 180) was moreish.

The runny-egg-lovers were delighted with their eggs benedict (Rs 260)—and even I, who dislike wayward yolks, had to admit that the English muffins topped with slices of chicken ham, poached eggs and Bearnaise sauce were addictive. When paired with chicken sausages (Rs 110), it made for a substantial treat. But all this paled into insignificance compared to the breakfast bagel sandwiches. The Salt Water Cafe bagels are perfect—soft, warm, chewy and marvellous with lashings of cream cheese (Rs 210). But the dish of the day was, without contest, the bagel sandwich with cream cheese and smoked salmon (Rs 500). Definitely worth repeating at every visit. Finally, we cheated a bit by sampling two dishes that were off the breakfast menu. The tenderloin burger with fried egg and tomato-mustard chutney was succulent and flavourful (Rs 400). While the fluffy flourless chocolate fudge cake served with caramel ice cream (Rs 250) proved to be the perfect way to end a lazy, indulgent morning.
