Human beings in their relationship to trees can be divided into four categories. At the bottom of this caste hierarchy are those who see them as inanimate objects with boles, branches and leaves—they are simply vriksh, ped or darakht—and treat them as dogs treat a lamp post. Higher in caste are those who regard them as living beings necessary to keep the environment clean. They are like Bishnois or Sunderlal Bahuguna’s followers of the Chipko movement. They’ll embrace trees to save them from the woodcutters’ axes but do not bother to know very much about them other than the difference between neem, peepal or keekar. Above them come botanists who know their Latin names, formation of leaves, flowers and fruit. They dissect them as science students dissect frogs and watch them twitching under microscopes. They have no personal involvement with them. The Brahmins of this tree-conscious caste system are lovers who talk to trees and their leaves, nurture them from saplings till they attain full maturity and battle against those who want to kill them.
