It has been a difficult period for Viren Rasquinha, who was dropped from the Indian hockey team barely a day before it left Delhi for Doha. But what pains the 26-year-old Mumbaikar more is that for the first time, India did not make it even to the semi-finals of an Asian Games tournament. Yet, if you expect him to be bitter, he proves you wrong as he speaks with passion about the sport he loves with all his heart. Excerpts from an exclusive interview with Outlook:

Is it possible for the Indian hockey team to get back on track?

I am an eternal optimist. I know there is a groundswell of support for hockey, even now. There is an emotional attachment that Indians have for hockey. I am sure that anyone who is connected with hockey in any capacity will desperately want the hockey team back on track soon.

How much of India’s problems would you attribute to the change in coaches?

Coaches should not be changed at the drop of a hat. I agree with Baskaran that coaches can only think up strategy and the players need to execute it. At the end of the...
