Public memory tends to be short. The constant bombardment with irrelevant information that masquerades as news has made it shorter still. That is why the Indian officialdom that wants no progress in the talks with Pakistan except on its own terms has not been able to resist the temptation to condemn the Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq as bikey huey log (men who have sold themselves to General Musharraf and Pakistan). The excuse was provided by a press conference the Mirwaiz gave in Islamabad after he and his colleagues met Musharraf. There he proclaimed the Hurriyat concurred completely with the president's approach to peace in Kashmir and commended the idea of withdrawing the Indian army from three towns as a first step towards the end of violence. However, what aroused New Delhi's ire was his statement that the Hurriyat would not accept a solution of the Kashmir dispute "within the framework of the Indian Constitution". And somewhat more surprisingly, that it had been understood from the start that its talks with Manmohan Singh were not constrained by it....
