In the late ’80s, an eager-beaver and charismatic Pramod Mahajan brought three essentials—unapologetic aggressiveness, strategic alliance and planning-management—to a Maharashtra BJP till then hung up on an old guard more concerned with ideology than action. Back then, no one gave the BJP any chance at power either at the state or Centre. But everyone believed Mahajan had a chance at changing the course of state politics, like a similarly young Sharad Pawar had done in the late ’70s. In fact, Pawar openly acknowledges there’s only one person other than himself who knows the geography-history-sociology-economy of the state as well as he does—and that’s Mahajan.

With the man battling for life, it’s no wonder the state unit has come to a near-standstill. Most programmes have been cancelled, workers are still doing the rounds of Mumbai. A party stalwart remarked that the BJP had been set behind by 20 years with this one incident. The party sees hope in Gopinath Munde, ex-state president and ex-deputy CM, a mass leader like Mahajan and related to him by marriage....
