Assam: Four Talking Points

  • Can Tarun Gogoi keep the current economic stability in the state intact?
  • Will Gogoi be able to keep insurgent outfits engaged in peace talks?
  • Will Assam see better infrastructure development in Gogoi's third term?
  • Will Gogoi’s difference of opinion with the PCC chief, seen during the elections, continue?

Hours before vote counting started on Friday, May 13, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi had this to say to the media waiting for him outside the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati: “We are sure about coming back to power for the third consecutive term.” This wasn’t just wishful thinking. By noon, the Congress victory in Assam was already reading ‘massive and impressive’. And if Assam was reason for the Congress to smile this summer, then that smile belonged to Tarun Gogoi. The ‘good news’ story had been scripted by the man himself.
