So, ethnic insurgency has finally arrived in West Bengal too. The recent attack by the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) on the CPI(M)’s Dhupguri office in north Bengal, killing five persons, brought to light the administration’s failure to reckon with the Kamtapuri movement.
According to intelligence sources, since 1996, the KLO has raised an estimated Rs 75 crore through extortion, ransom and protection money. At least 12 leaders—11 from CPI(M) and one from the RSP—have been killed. The KLO’s area of operation is in three north Bengal districts.
The Kamtapuris, the Rajbangshi community of Assam and Bengal, are demanding a separate state to be created by joining 12 districts of Bengal and Assam.
