It’s a case of onus laid twice over at Atal Behari Vajpayee’s door. And both times, it was L.K. Advani’s statements that the BJP has been "damaged" by the release of hostages at Kandahar - simultaneously insisting that the government had not mishandled the hijack crisis - which were seen to be the problem. That the buck stops with the prime minister is something Vajpayee is obviously aware of. But the fact that the hijack crisis was handled - bungled, according to a section of the saffron camp - by his team (Jaswant Singh, Brajesh Mishra, et al) and the pmo has added a new political dimension to it. Vajpayee, for the first time after leading his party to power, has become the target of a not-so-veiled campaign from the hardline element within the BJP and the Sangh parivar. In the process, the internal politics of the government, the party and the Sangh seem also to be undergoing a subtle change.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that a well-planned operation is afoot to corrode Vajpayee’s authority with the final aim of toppling him - remember...
