Around mid-June this year, Pakistan not just beat Australia in the world champions' own backyard, it was also one of its most convincing victories. A much-humbled Ricky Ponting said he needed to find an answer to Shoaib Akhtar if Australia were to nurse any hopes of retaining next year's World Cup in South Africa. Ponting's predecessor Steve Waugh thought that Pakistan looked like a side to take on all comers. Back home, they were lauded and feted, with President Pervez Musharraf hosting a reception in the presidency and presenting half a million rupees to each player.

But that was then. Now, in less than 90 days since that power-packed performance, the same Pakistan outfit is in absolute tatters, struggling to even put up a challenge to any halfway decent side.
