NEW DELHI
Manohar Joshi Speaking

Besides Joshi, petroleum minister Ram Naik, tourism minister Jagmohan, BJP spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra, were all considered for the post. However, Joshi’s name emerged as the natural choice as the two BJP ministers weren’t keen on giving up their ministerial berths and Malhotra was also vying for a cabinet post.

For most, the speaker’s post is considered decorative and often an end to one’s political career. But for 64-year-old Joshi, the new office will be a welcome change from the heavy industries and public enterprise portfolios he was handling. Joshi reportedly felt he was getting a raw deal when his party colleague Suresh Prabhu was first given the chemicals ministry and later shifted to the high-profile power ministry.

With Joshi becoming the speaker, Bal Thackeray will, in all likelihood, be celebrating the party’s success in cornering the prestigious post. And his joy is doubled by the added bonus Sena is due to get—another MP from the party to replace Joshi in the cabinet.
