Some Flesh With Beer
The Maharashtra government, known for its penchant for policing Mumbai’s night life, has sprung into action on complaints of growing alcoholism among the young and charges that the metro’s famous night life joints are ‘pick-up joints’. On February 25, they clamped down on the city’s dance bars and pubs and discos, while the state excise ministry notified bar owners to ensure they don’t serve alcohol to those under 21, beginning April 1. In a night-long raid, the Mumbai Police pulled the plug on 52 of the city’s most popular dance bars, arresting 1,600 people—including bar girls, owners, managers and customers. Bar owners have threatened to shut shop in protest.
