Some people go to film festivals to lie on the beach and stare at the stars. Or vice-versa. They are great places to cheat on spouses. I go to film festivals to get pissed. The movies are just an excuse. I saw some unforgettable films at the recent San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain but their names and plots escape me right now. There were also some dreadful films. At least the parts I saw were dreadful. Falling asleep during a screening is a valid critical response. But snoring is not permitted. You know how it is: a few pre-show drinks, the comfortable, cushioned seats, something awful flickering on the screen in front of you. Before you know it, you are lulled into a doze.

The Spaniards suffer from insomnia. At San Sebastian, where I spent 10 blissful days, all parties and serious eating began at midnight, after the last screening of the day. These festivities continued till dawn. The person who remains behind after the liquor is gone is the host. We live in surreal times. The World Trade Center clouded the proceedings a bit but not much. A number of American actors were expected, among them Warren Beatty and Julie Andrews, but they stayed away due to the calamity. As our hoteliers have learnt to their cost, Americans will not travel at the slightest hint of danger. Worshippers of Hollywood stars who choked the sidewalk every evening went home disappointed.
