Shaadi Se Pehle

You cannot look for a logical plot in Shaadi... but you do expect some nice lines and ribtickling situations. But these are few and far between.

Akhiyon se gal kar gayee...: that's a song in Shaadi Se Pehle which tries to capture the magic of Mallika Sherawat. A completely erroneous description. Here's a woman who just can't talk with her eyes. She only uses her pout, cleavage and swinging torso. No problems with that. In fact, Sherawat could have surely qualified for the adjective "refreshing" in her early films. But watch her now on screen, on magazine covers, in TV interviews and you can sense that she is losing her spontaneity to the seductress image she is constantly trying to live up to. She has become trapped in her own blatant sexuality. In contemporary Hollywood, I can think of two distinct models of sexiness—Pamela Anderson and Anjelina Jolie. Jolie's enigma grows on you with every film but Anderson has become plain boring, nothing more than fodder for some mean, sexist jokes. Shaadi Se Pehle shows that Sherawat too is going the Anderson way with her token bikini appearances where the bikini becomes more significant than her.

Another person who needs career advice is Akshaye Khanna. He is a nice, likeable actor but gets to play a rather annoying character—a guy trying to shrug off his fiancee (Ayesha Takia) by romancing the sister (Sherawat) of a mafia don (Suniel Shetty). Why? Because he thinks he's dying of cancer. Reminds you of the Amol Palekar-Ranjeeta comedy, Meri Biwi Ki Shaadi. But Shaadi... is hardly a patch on the gentle original. Though Khanna tries his level best to salvage the show with his innate decency, it doesn't work. Floral shirts, psychedelic trousers are fine with Govinda but make Khanna look like a bad hangar. Top it with the most ludicrous wig seen in contemporary Hindi cinema and you wonder why Khanna had to do this to himself. He isn't in any great company. Takia is no more than bubbly. Rajpal Yadav, as the sidekick, overdoes his already loud act so badly that you feel like sending him to acting school for a refresher course. It's Shetty as the don Anna, chaubees ghante chauknana who livens up the scene.

Of course, you can't look for a logical plot in Shaadi... but you do expect some nice lines and ribtickling situations. But these are few and far between. You can count the nice touches: like when Khanna, realising that he is going to die, switches on the TV—only to see SRK singing Kal Ho Na Ho followed by Rajesh Khanna with Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye in Anand.
