Just as in 2004, the election verdict has surprised us—but this time on account of the clarity in favour of growth-inducing policies and stability. The voter has displayed an extraordinary level of common sense and maturity. It’s clear this election will hasten the process of confining hackneyed mantras like caste, other forms of identity politics, anti-incumbency, and the use of strong arm tactics by so-called bahubalis to the dustbin of history. Indian democracy is surely and steadily moving towards rewarding performance. This will yield a democratic dividend through the adoption of competitive good governance by all political parties, which so far have tended to outdo each other in competitive populism. This is good news for India whose economy needs to grow at a minimum of 8-9 per cent if the scourge of poverty and unacceptable deprivation is to be rooted out.
