Police in Hyderabad have busted another major illegal kidney transplant racket involving at least five of the city’s top corporate hospitals. The cops claim that they have evidence of at least 28 illegal transplants and are investigating another 50 surgeries conducted over the past year-and-a-half. The police have arrested half-a-dozen brokers and seven illegal donors. The touts too have one kidney missing. Some of the "donors"—typically desperately poor folk—claim they were not aware selling organs was illegal. A donor usually makes Rs 50,000 to Rs 80,000 for a kidney and the brokers net Rs 10,000-50,000. Investigating authorities claim they are forwarding their report to the state’s kidney transplant authorisation committee. However, the committee itself happens to be under scrutiny, given that it has to clear all the cases where a donor is not related to the patient.
